2010 Adelaide Cinémathèque

It’s about time I wrote something about the 2010 Adelaide Cinémathèque which is now well under way. For those who aren’t familiar with it the Cinémathèque is a film club based at the Mercury Cinema on Morphett St. They have a program running each year from the end of March up until mid December consisting of a great variety of films usually grouped into session of 3 or 4 films which are linked by a particular theme. There are two films per week, they show each Monday and Thursday at 7:30pm. Due to the conditions under which they get access to the films (as a film club), they cannot sell single tickets, instead you have to become a member. This is easy, you just fill in a form and pay for either 4 films ($35/$25 concession), 16 films ($70/$50) or an annual membership for $99/$80 – this can be great value, I got an annual membership last year for the first time and went to about 25 films.

To give you an idea of the variety on offer, some of the highlights for me last year were:

Distant Voices, Still Lives a compelling drama by English filmmaker Terence Davies who I wasn’t previously familiar with, Russian Sci-fi classic Solaris, some big screen epics – Lawrence of Arabia and Gone With the Wind, a Sam Peckinpah series including his masterpiece The Wild Bunch, a series by one of my very favourite directors Ingmar Bergman, Starstruck – a crazy 80’s Australian film set about a band competition which was very silly and lots of fun, the rare Cool World with it’s ultra-realist take on 60’s new york teenage gangs, some brilliant and completely different animations including the obscure Australian film Grendel Grendel Grendel , a witty retelling of Beowulf from the point of view of the monster, and the disturbing and essential Waltz with Bashir, an account of one person’s attempt to regain memories of their part in the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon. There were also some hilarious Cary Grant comedies, but the last program I saw was possibly my favourite of the whole year as I was introduced to the genius of Jaques Tati. In particular Play Time is an absolute masterpiece.

And then there’s all the things that I can’t believe I missed, such as Aguirre and the Kurosawa program and lots more.

This year’s program is available here, go and have a browse through it, there’s plenty of great stuff there. As usual a great variety of genres, and mix between popular classics and rarely seen obscurities.

Based on tonight’s Jaques Demy film (which is not renowned as one of his best but was nevertheless excellent) it should be worth catching the remaing films in the current series. I’m also keen on seeing the amazing Baraka on the big screen again,
The online program goes only to July but there will be films from then right up to December, the full program for the second half of the year will be announced towards the end of the current one (memberships continue to the second half of the year).

[gigs]

Sorry for the lack of updates, there’s been so much going on (I’ve managed something like 17 gigs in 17 days recently, and have another 6 or so before next week).

I just heard that there’s some sort of noise thing happening at Format (on Peel St) tonight, starts at 6. Later tonight hip-hop MC Busdriver is playing at Arcade Lane. He’s from LA & has worked with the excellent Daedelus in the past. He also plays Rocket on Friday.

Also on Friday is Robert Forster which is apparently sold out. On Saturday is Dinosaur Jr, and also Naked on the Vague at the Metro. On Sunday night there’ll be the big format festival closing night.

I have a feeling that there is also something on tomorrow but there’s so much that I’m having trouble keeping track! If anyone knows of anything good on Thursday 11th then let me know.

Also the Jandek tour has been confirmed! He plays at the Gov on March 28. He will be backed by David Keenan and Heather Leigh Murray, and supporting is Primitive Calculators. This is amazing, go to it. I’m sick of great bands coming to Adelaide and no-one turning up (e.g. the absolutely brilliant Curse ov Dialect last weekend).

Unfortunately upcoming tours by two of the greatest NZ bands, The Bats and The Chills, will both miss Adelaide.

MARCH

  • 10th Busdriver at Arcade Lane.
  • 12th Robert Forster is the guest at Julia Zemiro’s Comfort Zone in the Spiegeltent.
  • 12th Busdriver at Rocket.

  • 14th Format Festival Closing night with Naked on the Vague, Fkn Tutts, Fair Maiden, Burnt Skulls, Dud Pills.
  • 18th Raekwon at HQ.

  • 25th Eddy Current Suppression Ring at Jive.

[gigs] Pimmon returns to Adelaide

Big news this week is that Pimmon is coming back to town. He played a couple of my favourite shows of the year back in 2008. This time he’s playing a show at the Electronic Music Unit at Adelaide Uni which should be a really excellent venue for him. The details are

“Pimmon
“A performance like a slow-motion white water torrent. In space.”
with Christian Haines
Saturday 20 February
9.00pm sharp
THE EMU SPACE, Electronic Music Unit
5th Floor, Schulz Building, University of Adelaide
http://emu.adelaide.edu.au/contact/
$5 entry
(enter via the Scott Theatre lifts behind the Schulz building, Kintore Avenue, Gate 15)”

This is an excellent chance to see a unique Australian artist who does not perform live very often, in a superb performance space. I can’t recommend it highly enough. At this time of year lots of Adelaide people go out to all sort of shows that they wouldn’t normally go to, associated with the festival or the fringe, but stuff like this often slips through the cracks because it doesn’t get such high profile advertising. Paying $5 is not much of a risk to take to experience something different though. Here is a great review of his latest album if you want to know more.

Pimmon at Big Star Records, 2008

On the topic of the Fringe Festival, one thing that really stands out is the Shimmering West Music Festival taking place on light square. It involves some local favourites like Satan’s Cheerleaders and God God Dammit Dammit, but even better it brings the long awaited return of the brilliant Curse Ov Dialect. Unfortunately much of it clashes with Womadelaide, it’ll depend on the full Womad schedule but I’ll do my best to get up to Light Square for Curse of Dialect on Friday 5th of March.

Last week the Laneway Festival was great, highlights were The XX, Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Kid Sam, Hockey and Echo & the Bunnymen. Some good news is that Kid Sam will be back in town for a show at the Metro in April.

Some tours that are missing Adelaide are NZ legends The Bats (April) and The Chills (May). Also a bit of a disappointment is that Kid Koala is missing Adelaide on an upcoming tour, he’s always played here to good crowds on his previous tours. Also, soon to be announced is a tour by Tortoise, but they’ve never been here before so an Adelaide date is quite unlikely.

Tasmanians (or at least that’s where they started) The Paradise Motel are back after a 10 year absence, only a Melbourne show at this point though. A couple of the members (one original and one new) used to play in Adelaide band The Outland Brothers.

No details yet but Zulya will be visiting Adelaide again around April-May on a tour supporting the release of her new album.

A rumour that has been around is that The Wedding Present might tour Australia. They’re upcoming world tour is celebrating the 20th anniversary of their classic album Bizarro so that would be brilliant if they did make it here.

Finally, one more reminder that this Friday I’ll be doing a DJ set at the Metro. You can expect to hear some great post punk from the likes of PIL, Gang of Four, Wire, The Fall, Pere Ubu, Laughing Clowns, The Birthday Party, Joy Division and lots more.

[gigs] Jandek in Adelaide

Not sure if there’s an official announcement yet, but it looks like Jandek will play in Adelaide on March 28. Liveguide lists an Australian tour, but just with dates & states, on the Mess & Noise forums Melvo says it’s at the Gov with the Primitive Calculators. If it is true then well done to Heathen Skulls for being a tour promoter that brings artists to Adelaide, last year they were responsible for the Lightning Bolt tour.

Here is the info from their website:

Hailing from Houston, Texas, Jandek is the musical project of an outsider musician whose name and identity has been a mystery for over 30 years. Since 1978, Jandek has self-released over 60 albums of dissonant and often emotionally dissolute folk / blues through his label Corwood Industries.

Jandek often plays a highly idiosyncratic and frequently atonal form of folk and blues, that border very closely on the avant-garde. Refusing to use any form of traditionalism with structure, chords and tuning, Jandek has created a stylized form of music that is entirely his own. Lyrically he mirrors the country blues and folk traditions of East Texas, but sonically, he’s in a league of his own.

In 2004, a documentary was released entitled ‘Jandek on Corwood’. It documented Jandek’s recorded history and the people that have had contact with him, which is not many as he had never played live and only granted one interview, and that was back in 1985. Up until 2004 no one was certain of his identity.

The mystery of Jandek’s identity was unveiled in October 2004 when he appeared for the first time live at the 04 Music Festival in Glasgow, Scotland. He has since made a number of live appearances at festivals like All Tomorrow’s Parties, Pitchfork and SXSW.

Up until 2009, Jandek’s backing band consisted of musicians from bands such as Tortoise, Grails, Quasi and Grouper - his backing band changed for each performance, depending on who was available at the time. In 2009 he settled on a permanent rhythm section from Glasgow, Scotland, which consists of Volcanic Tongue Records owner and WIRE contributor David Keenan (Drums), and his partner Heather Leigh Murray.

Heathen Skulls is very proud to present for the first time in Australia, JANDEK!

Coming up this Friday is the Laneway Festival. Gates open at 2pm. I’m keen to see Eddy Current Suppression Ring & The XX in particular, but there’s quite a few acts I know very little about so I’m keen on checking out some new music.

Also, coming up on the following Friday (Feb 12th) I’ll be doing a DJ set at the Metro with a post-punk theme.

Rumour has it that the Wedding Present are looking to possibly tour Australia after a visit to Japan in May. An Adelaide show might be a bit much to ask for … perhaps another visit to Melbourne will be required if it happens.

Also one of my favourite bands from my Sydney days were Crow, they’re back together and have a new album on the way so a tour should be on the cards as well.

Eric Rohmer (1920-2010)

It happened almost a week ago but I’ve only just heard that Eric Rohmer has died. He was, for me, the best film director there has been. It’s hard to descibe, since many people seem to find his films boring, but for me they are perfect. This blog is named for one of them, but I have greatly enjoyed them all, and while he did live to a good age and was making films almost to the end, I still cannot help but be very sad at the news. No more Rohmer, no more Bergman … for me no-one matches these two, and now they are both gone.
