[gigs] Will Pavement come to Australia?

I don’t know, but with the reunion confirmed there are lots of rumours that they’ll be in Australia in February or March. Of course there’s no need to wait that long for Stephen Malkmus since he plays with The Jicks at Fowler’s live tomorrow night.

Here they are with Gardenia from the latest album

and here’s a reminder of what’s so exciting about a Pavement reunion

Other visitors to Adelaide this weekend are Songs, who are from Sydney (but mostly originally from NZ) and get comparisons with the likes of The Clean & the Go-Betweens and have recently put out split singles with The Bats and Love of Diagrams. What does all this add up to? I’d say they are definitely worth seeing. More info here and here.

Also there’s Native Cats from Tassie, playing shows on both Friday & Saturday

Plimer Update

I don’t have much more to say on the topic of Ian Plimer and his views on climate change, however an old post from a couple of years ago dealing with an interview he did on the ABC Science show continues to get lots of visits thanks to a link from Brave New Climate. Since these hits are likely to be people looking for info on Plimer due to his recent book and various interviews/opinion pieces in the press I wanted to put in a post to direct people to up to date info. In general you can keep up with the latest by following Deltoid, Open Mind, Greenfyre’s and George Monbiot. In particular much of the recent discussion about Plimer relates to the ongoing saga of a possible debate between him and Monbiot, which has had lots of coverage. Basically Plimer challenged Monbiot to a debate, but given that Monbiot’s problem was that Plimer makes (in his book and in recent interviews) certain claims that do not appear to be backed up by the evidence, then he saw little point in a debate in which those claims would probably just be repeated, so he made a condition that Plimer answer certain questions first. These questions are all about sources for specific claims in Plimer’s book, but thus far he has not answered. Instead he responded with his own set of questions which appeared to be either an attempt to ridicule Monbiot’s (very reasonable) questions, an attempt to intimidate him with technicalities (many of which don’t appear to be terribly relevant – see the Real Climate link below), a rerun of a bunch of the usual denier arguments dressed up as exam-style questions, or some combination of the above. Note  that a two way exchange of questions was not part of the deal anyway. More recently there has been more delay – all the details are in the posts below. There has been plenty of commentary on this and I don’t feel the need to add any more to it, but for anyone who has come here looking for the latest then here are plenty of links to follow.

For reviews/debunkings of Plimer’s book Heaven and Earth, see my earlier post Details of Heaven and Earth which contains many links.

The Debate

These are all of George Monbiot’s posts on the matter:

George Monbiot has harsh words for a Spectator article which quotes many claims from Ian Plimer’s book.

Plimer challenges Monbiot to a debate, but Monbiot wants him to source his dubious claims first.

Plimer accepts Monbiot’s conditions and Monbiot publishes his questions for Plimer, which are all about Plimer providing sources/justification for claims made in his book.

Plimer responds with a list of questions of his own (not part of the original agreement as far as I can tell) and without answering Monbiot’s questions.

Plimer continues to avoid Monbiot’s questions.

(Added 15/9) Monbiot gives up on getting answers.

The ABC Unleashed Article

Another recent development is that the ABC published an opinion piece by Ian Plimer.

Tim Lambert says that Plimer is not entitled to his own facts.

Tamino questions Plimer’s claims about Volcanoes and then   says that Plimer’s pants are on fire.

Deep Climate complains to the ABC, more here, and the ABC’s unsatisfactory response.

[gigs] The Pixies return to Adelaide

The Pixies are set to return to Adelaide next March for an (unofficial i.e. not one of the ones that Feel Presents say are on the way) Don’t Look Back show playing the album Doolittle. Other new highlights this week are the duo Lightning Bolt at Fowler’s in November, and also in November we get a visit from the Buzzcocks (whose original tour dates did not include Adelaide).

Here is Lightning Bolt in action in Paris recently

Don’t forget that this weekend there are some visitors from some Melbourne based Europeans. Friday is Zulya (originally from Russia):

and both Friday and Saturday are Kris Wanders (originally from the Netherlands):

[youtube Y9BrWHF_-z0]

(this is not the band he’ll be with this weekend – to see the rest of them see this earlier post. )

Finally it’s that time of year when the gig rumours are plentiful so I’ll pass on a couple which I’ve heard and which could well be a load of rubbish that someone made up – Pavement for Laneway, Blur for the BDO.

Janus on DVD

I used to regularly complain that the ABC series Phoenix wasn’t available on dvd, until ABC released it last year. Of course, as soon as it came out I started worrying about whether they would release the second series and the follow-up series Janus. No need for worry, they’ve looked after the fans by continuing the releases without too much delay, with Phoenix out earlier this year, and now Janus following without too much delay at all. According to the ABC shop website Janus will be available on the 1st of October. Anyone who watched Phoenix will definitely want to continue with Janus. It is not a direct sequel as such, the only direct link is through one cast member from Phoenix (Simon Westaway as Peter ‘Noddy’ Faithful) who continues on, but it is follows a similar format to Phoenix in following one story over an entire season and overall has a very similar style. This time a criminal investigation is followed from the point of view of the courts rather than the police. Definitely recommended. In fact even if you haven’t seen both series of Phoenix you could easily start on this without realising you’d missed anything, the story is completely independent.

[gigs] Kris Wanders Quartet

(UPDATE: I originally got lineup info from Wanders’ website – the latest info I have is that the lineup on both nights is

Kris Wanders (tenor sax)
Slawek Janicki (double bass)
Qba Janicki (drums)

that update was wrong, Andy Sugg defintely was there last night, it was a quartet show)

Next month sees the return of Kris Wanders & Andy Sugg to Adelaide. Details of the shows are here (along with more info about Kris Wanders). This is exciting news, the shows I’ve seen by these guys were incredibly good. In particular for fans of free jazz I would rate them as absolutely unmissable.

Here is  a 4 part video showing Wanders with a group which includes the drummer (Qba Janicki) who’ll be joining him for both shows here, and the bassist (Slawek Janicki) who’ll play at the Exeter.

Also lots of interesting news at the Feel Presents site – including confirmation that there’ll be Don’t Look Back concerts early next year (The Laughing Clowns perhaps? Maybe Mr Uddich Schmuddich Goes to Town AKA the greatest Australian album ever?), and tours by Dinosaur Jr and Yo La Tengo.

Ingmar Bergman at the Adelaide Cinémathèque

Starting this week and continuing into next week at the Adelaide Cinémathèque is Lives of Shadow and Light: The Films of Ingmar Bergman. I’ve written about the Cinémathèque recently, and also wrote about Bergman here. One of the highlights of last year’s program was Bergman’s The Seventh Seal and this year we’re lucky enough to get three of his films. If you’ve not yet been to the Cinémathèque then now would be a good time to go. I’ll quote the descriptions of the three films from the Cinémathèque website, together with some relevant Youtube videos

7:30pm Monday 24 August

THE VIRGIN SPRING

Sweden 1960 88mins 35mm
When a devout young girl is raped and killed by goat herders, the most sacred beliefs of her deeply religious parents are challenged as they become consumed by a violent need for justice and revenge. Based on a medieval ballad set in 14th century Sweden, this allegorical tale examines the conflicts of a society transitioning from Paganism to Christianity. It is also notable for being the unlikely inspiration for Wes Craven’s notorious nasty Last House on the Left. Stars Birgitta Valberg and Max von Sydow. Print courtesy of the ACMI collection.

7:30pm Thursday 27 August
CRIES AND WHISPERS

Sweden 1972 91mins 35mm
Terminally ill Agnes is joined at her bedside by sisters Maria and Karin as she waits to die. But as her sisters’ jealousies and resentment surface, much of Agnes’ emotional comfort is left to Anna her devoted and fatalistic maid. Through a series of flashbacks, the inner lives of these women are examined as each one recounts a painful moment in their lives in this intense, disturbing and powerful family drama about repression, spirituality, sexual passion, hatred and death. Stars Harriet Andersson, Ingrid Thulin and Liv Ullmann. Print courtesy of the ACMI collection.

7:30pm Monday 31 August
WILD STRAWBERRIES

Sweden 1957 93mins 35mm
As a cynical, ageing academic, travels with his daughter-in-law to receive an honorary University degree, he also embarks on a journey from emotional isolation to personal redemption. Reliving his past through a series of memories and dreams that blur reality and imagination, Professor Borg recalls his childhood with its wild strawberry patch and his childhood sweetheart, his elderly mother alone in her large house, and his long-dead wife, bitter and disappointed by her husband’s inability to love. Stars Bibi Andersson, Max Von Sydow and Victor Sjöström. Print courtesy of the ACMI collection.

More from the Laughing Clowns

Perhaps I should consider a name change to the Ed Kuepper fan blog or something to that effect. Anyway, this message is up on the Laughing Clowns myspace page:

The Laughing Clowns, following the enormous success of the last shows MAY be doing some select live dates in Australia. January 2010 had been mentioned. Nothing is confirmed. We will post when we know. Love you all. Expect something special.

Well, if anything will take my mind of the fact that I’m not at Mt Buller at an ATP festival in January then this is it.

In the meantime, the ABC will be showing a live Laughing Clowns show on Thursday the 17th of Sepetember as part of their Live at the Basement series (so it’s one of the shows from early May).

[gigs] Ed Kuepper returns to Adelaide

Having finished touring as a Bad Seeds, Ed will be bringing the Kowalski Collective back to Adelaide. They played a great show at the Gov last year, and I’m hoping that Ed will now be at work on a follow-up to Jean Lee & the Yellow Dog and perhaps we’ll get to hear some of it. Full details of the national tour are at the Feel Presents site.

Here are some videos of Ed & the Kowalski Collective in action at the Don’t Look Back performances of Honey Steel’s Gold last year.

[youtube EBHSgNWrINo]

[youtube xbaU0wYbMo0]

Also recently announced, Love of Diagrams visit the Jade Monkey in October, and Jarvis Cocker plays at HQ in December.

If you don’t want to wait so long for gigs then note that there are loads of them this month. I’d particularly like to recommend Dan V‘s residency at the Exeter on Monday nights all month. He plays guitar in Like Leaves (who played an excellent set at the Metro last weekend) and has previously played in a number of other bands including Headdress of Neon Flames. His shows at the Exeter are all solo, and on the evidence of last night (as well as a bunch of other Dan V solo shows I’ve seen) shouldn’t be missed. It’s free, so why not? The word is that next week (17th) is going to be particularly good. For those who’ve taken my advice and taken up a membership at the Cinémathèque, you can still catch some of it after the film.

Like Leaves:

[youtube kA7BMlGstYQ]

Also this week is the farewell tour for the Lucksmiths. I’ve never seen them so I may well go along since it’s my last chance. If you want to know about them there are lots of reviews here.

On Saturday there is a difficult choice between three great local gigs (then again The Grace, The Metro and the Ed are all pretty close together so perhaps no choice is necessary … wouldn’t be the first time I’ve managed three gigs in one night).

UPDATE – heard about this just after posting the original email. Zulya & the Children of the Underground will play at the Dunstan Playhouse on September 11. Full details here.

Last weekend I saw a fantastic performance from Panoptique Electrical at their cd launch (shame there were so few people there). It was absolutely one of the gigs of the year, I highly recommend them so if you’re somewhere other than Adelaide watch out for whether they’re coming your way. Particularly recommended for fans of The Necks, Stars of the Lid, Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

Panoptique Electrical cd launch this Friday

Thanks to Nick for passing this on:

Yes To Fear, Yes To Desire is the second album from Panoptique Electrical AKA Jason Sweeney (Pretty Boy Crossover, Mist & Sea). It follows on from 2008’s Let The Darkness At You, an album which garnered significant critical praise and has become one of Sensory Projects’ best selling releases outside of Australia.

Celebrating the release of the new album Yes To Fear, Yes To Desire, Panoptique Electrical will be touring around Australia in August. The tour begins in Adelaide:

Friday 7 Aug 2009
ELECTRONIC MUSIC UNIT – EMU SPACE
Adelaide University
5th Floor, Schulz Building
(enter through Scott Theatre foyer lifts)
$10 – 8:00PM

Find Panoptique Electrical live in 2009 and you will experience the extension in the line-up, coming via the addition of Zoë Barry (cello – Ladykillers, Hope Diamond) and Jed Palmer (guitar – Bergerac, Mist & Sea, Hope Diamond), and Tristan Louth-Robins (laptoptronica – aka Red_Robin). The results are expansive depth of sound, the combination of guitar drones, Zoë’s exquisite cello work, and nuances and tones from Louth-Robins, recalling early 4ad outfits The Cocteau Twins and This Mortal Coil and their mesmeric recorded works.

Yes To Fear, Yes To Desire is released August 8 through Sensory Projects, distributed by Inertia.
The tour is financially assisted by the Sound Travellers initiative.
