World Music DJ set this Sunday

As usual it’s at the Metro on Grote St, near the central markets. Will feature music from a number of artists playing at this year’s and previous Womadelaides plus lots of other music from around the world.

Veloway + Coast to Vines

Thought I’d try out the two big bike paths down south, the Veloway which follows the Southern Expressway and the Coast to Vines trail which goes between Marino and McLaren Vale (with the Shiraz Trail extending it to Willunga). Of course, you can’t go to Willunga without riding up the hill.

[gigs] Last minute gig guide

oops, forgot a couple of things tonight.

At Format the festival continues with the Format Festival of Song #2 “Sunday Picnic” featuring two Melbourne acts, Aluka and Soursop. From Five Thousand:

Cancel high tea with your BFFs and defer dinner with your Grandma this Sunday so you can attend the Format Festival of Song Vol 2: Sunday Picnic. There’s nothing sweeter than three-piece acapaella girl group Aluka and folky-lady Soursop (who is anything but), both out of Melbourne. Think vintage dresses, posies of flowers, adorable hairstyles, fairy lights, wistful looks and earnest melodies. You’ll come out feeling like you OD’d on fairy floss. Begins at the family-friendly time of 5pm. BYO teacups and macarons.

That’s in about half an hour so go soon.

Later on (about 9 I think), Lenin Simos is playing at the Exeter. The last time I saw him there (after the opening of the Tour Down Under) it was excellent.

[gigs]

Quick update with the latest on various festival related gigs, mostly the Format festival (see full program here) which opened last night with an excellent gig.

Also there is a bit of Fringe related stuff happening, with the two new venues from last year, Shimmering West & Arcade Lane happening again. Like last year it’s not too easy to find out much about what’s happening at them though which is a shame – it meant there were some shows (e.g. Curse Ov Dialect at SW, Busdriver at AL) with terribly poor turnouts because nobody knew about them.

Also I’ll mention a couple of things I’ve got coming up. I’ll have my regular Sunday arvo DJ set at the Metro on Feb 27th. Haven’t quite decided but leaning towards a bit of a world music theme with Womad coming up soon. Then in March I’m doing a special Indie Pop set in the Metro front bar before and after the Belle & Sebastian gig next door at Her Majesty’s Theatre. More details closer to the event.

Coming up really soon, for reasons I don’t entirely understand, I’ll be a guest at An Evening with Home for the Def at the Format Festival this Tuesday.

The Scenic Route to Flinders Uni

Had to go to Flinders Uni for work so I decided to take the scenic route. A highlight was Sturt Valley Road, I hadn’t been all the way along that before, very nice road for cycling. Also saw a koala in Belair National Park. Was a bit slow up to Crafers since I was carrying lots of stuff, the panniers were packed full.

[gigs] Underground Lovers back together

I was really happy to see the Underground Lovers back together just over a year ago, but since then, nothing (though I did get to see many of them at an excellent GB3 gig last year). Good news this week is that they are playing again, still not in Adelaide, it’s two shows supporting Primal Scream in Melbourne, but apparently they are putting out a compilation and doing a national tour. Of course “national” doesn’t always mean Adelaide but I’m hoping for some good news ….

DJ Set – Australia Day special

Last Sunday I played a set of Australian music at the Metro, here is the recording on Mixcloud in 5 parts.
I was just going to post it without making any changes but there was a bit of clipping on some tracks, and a couple were to the extent of being unlistenable. This is due to having to adjust the levels as the background noise in the bar varies as people come & go (and still getting the hang of some new software). So for a couple of tracks I pasted in new copies but wherever possible kept the mixing part, and for others I just cleaned up the clipping. I also tweaked the levels here & there where tracks were particularly quiet, but there’ll still be a bit of variability which is inevitable in a live set. Since I was fixing things anyway I did make a couple of major changes to part 3, I managed to stuff up two tracks by one of my favourite bands who have recently reunited and may tour this year, so I want their stuff sounding right so people hear it and want to see them when they tour – so on one track I edited the intro to take out a rather bad mix, and I rerecorded the last 3 songs which were spoiled by some illadvised beat-mixing (it was 3.5 hours into the set and I was maybe trying to keep things interesting … and had probably had a few drinks).

so here it is, all five hours …

DJ Mix: Ninja Tune Parts 1 & 2

I’ve started using Mixcloud to post DJ mixes online.

Late last year I did an all Ninja Tune set at the Metro to celebrate the label’s 20th birthday, since then I’ve been working on a recording of the set, but have been making lots of improvements along the way so it’s getting pretty big. Here are the first two parts.
