The End of the Line screening again

Next week there is another screening of the documentary The End of the Line at the Mercury Cinema. It is being presented by the Adelaide branch of the Greens SA. The issues covered are particularly relevant to the campaign for Marine Parks in SA, see Greens MP Mark Parnell’s site, or the Wilderness Society, whose campaign manager Peter Owen will be available to answer questions after the screening.

From the filmmaker’s website:

The End of the Line, the first major feature documentary film revealing the impact of overfishing on our oceans, had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in the World Cinema Documentary Competition. Sundance took place in Park City, Utah, January 15-25, 2009.

In the film we see firsthand the effects of our global love affair with fish as food.

It examines the imminent extinction of bluefin tuna, brought on by increasing western demand for sushi; the impact on marine life resulting in huge overpopulation of jellyfish; and the profound implications of a future world with no fish that would bring certain mass starvation.

Filmed over two years, The End of the Line follows the investigative reporter Charles Clover as he confronts politicians and celebrity restaurateurs, who exhibit little regard for the damage they are doing to the oceans.

One of his allies is the former tuna farmer turned whistleblower Roberto Mielgo – on the trail of those destroying the world’s magnificent bluefin tuna population.

Filmed across the world – from the Straits of Gibraltar to the coasts of Senegal and Alaska to the Tokyo fish market – featuring top scientists, indigenous fishermen and fisheries enforcement officials, The End of the Line is a wake-up call to the world.

Andrew L Urban:

Helped enormously by a wonderfully rich score, The End of the Line presents its arguments cogently and without hysteria – but alarmingly. Clearly, apart from plain bureaucratic stupidity, money (ie greed) is what’s at the end of the line; a small number of operators are making multi million dollar harvests. And no-one is saying stop, except perhaps those who made this film. But there is a glimmer of hope …

Roger Ebert:

“The End of the Line,” directed by Rupert Murray, based on a book by Charles Clover, is constructed from interviews with many experts, a good deal of historical footage, and much incredible footage from under the sea, including breathtaking vistas of sea preserves, where the diversity of species can be seen to grow annually. We once thought of the sea as limitless bounty. I think I may even have heard that in school. But those fantasies are over.

Paracombe

Started out heading for Fox Creek Rd, but realised that I probably didn’t have time to go that far (especially after a delayed start due to a puncture), so I decided to take the Paracombe turnoff from Gorge Rd which I’ve been meaning to check out for a while. I hadn’t been around the Paracombe/Ansteys Hill region before so it was good to check out a different area. There are great views as you come down, it’s well worth checking out.

[gigs] Portishead + Mercury Rev

Big news this week is that a Harvest sideshow has been announced for Adelaide – Portishead & Mercury Rev at Thebby Theatre on November 17th.

Meanwhile tomorrow night there’s Henry Wagons or a choice of two great local gigs, if you’re not going to at least one of them then what the hell are you doing on my blog?

On Saturday the enigmatic DJ Wolfpanther will play an epic set at Format for the SALA Peel St Party.

Also, a couple of acts that are missing Adelaide but who you may well want to see if you happen to be on the East Coast at the right time are Times New Viking (next week) and Akron/Family (around the start of October).

[gigs] Ennio Morricone, Allen Toussaint, Konono No.1

That would make for an interesting lineup but it’s actually three different shows. In early October New Orleans Legend Allent Toussaint is coming to Adelaide with the Legends of New Orleans Tour. I already liked his work, but after recently watching Treme I’m really excited about this one.

In late October, “Congotronics” originators Konono No.1 have been added to the bill for the Earth Station festival (i.e. Womad spinoff in Belair National Park). I’ve been wanting to see these guys for years, always had my fingers crossed for them to play at Womad.

The first music announcement for the Adelaide Festival next year is the great film composer Ennio Morricone (actually I played some of his work at my last Metro DJ set, I had no idea a visit to Adelaide was about to be announced).

Something else to watch out for is a new festival on the East Coast called Harvest which is run by the Soundwave people – some highlights so far are Portishead, Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev. More to be announced, and maybe some interstate sideshows.

Cadel Evans is Australia’s first Tour de France champion

Yes, it’s not official until Paris around this time tomorrow …. but he’s got it. Incredible time trial tonight after a great all round tour, in particular the tough chases he put in to keep in touch with the Schlecks in the alps. Watch on SBS tomorrow night to see him ride into Paris in the yellow jersey.
