Amy’s Ride

Big ride today, the 100km Amy’s Ride, including 18km ride to the start, and a 48 km ride home from McLaren Vale for a total of 166km (shows up as slightly less on the map because a few corners are cut).

Was lots of fun. I think my previous longest was about 80km, so it was quite a step up. Also my first go at an organised ride, everything seemed to run well to plan.

Riding down the Southern Expressway was an obvious highlight, such a great idea using it for a bike ride. I started a bit too far back in the pack so I was going a bit slower than I would have liked on much of it though. At the end of the expressway the ride down into Old Noarlunga was very nice, I’m not sure that I’ve been there before. From there it was over to the coast, it’s ages since I last went down Commercial Road so I’d forgotten that there’s some pretty steep hills, gave me a chance to really push it after my training on the likes of Corkscrew Rd and Mt Osmond. Then there were great views as we came into Port Willunga, then back inland, and it started to heat up a bit (but never to the point of being uncomfortable).

Next challenge was Willunga Hill, famous from the Tour Down Under, which I’d never been up before. Given my recently discovered love of climbing, it was obviously a highlight for me. Never terribly steep but it just keeps going on in a long grind. By that point I’d already done about 75km for the day but had no trouble getting to the top. Then there was a fairly flat ride through some picturesque farmland before a slightly dicey descent down Wickhams Hill.

With under 20km to go to McLaren Vale I was expecting perhaps a gentle descent the rest of the way, but the last section was all rolling hills with some fairly nasty inclines at times.

I returned along the Coast to Vines trail, and then the veloway. The Coast to Vines was a nice easy ride – mostly it follows where a railway line used to be so it’s fairly flat. Some of the old railway cuttings it goes through a quite spectacular. The veloway into Darlington gives great views of Flinders Uni and up to the city.

[gigs] Le Rayon Vert presents … this Friday at the Jade Monkey

No longer just a gig guide, now Le Rayon Vert is even organising gigs for you to go to as well. This coming Friday Le Rayon Vert presents Satan’s Cheerleaders, Mondo Phase Band and Wolfpanther at the Jade Monkey.

Satan’s Cheerleaders return to the live music scene after a nine month hiatus during which Simon and Jarrad played a tour in Europe, Jamie made a record and Derek discovered the path to true enlightenment. With renewed vigour, rippling muscles and daring haircuts, Satan’s Cheerleaders will be giving a sneak peak of their upcoming second album. Brand spanking new music, same sexy cheerleaders. See them at the Jade Monkey on Friday November 12th together with the krautrock-inspired freakouts of Mondo Phase Band and the enigmatic Wolfpanther.

Omar Souleyman to play WOMADelaide

Womadelaide have announced a small preview of their lineup for 2011, and I am really pleased to see that it includes Omar Souleyman. I only recently got one of his cds and on listening to it my immediate thought was “I really hope that he’ll be at WOMAD next year” though I really wasn’t too sure of how likely it would be. There’s been quite a few gig-related disappointments lately so it’s great to have some good gig news for Adelaide.

The lineup so far is Afro Celt Sound System, Alan Kelly Quartet, Angus and Julia Stone, Creole Choir of Cuba, Hanggai, Nitin Sawhney, Omar Souleyman, Rajendra Prasanna, Rango

[gigs] Laneway lineup announced

The lineup for next year’s Laneway Festival was announced today, I think it looks like a good one, as usual (and unlike the BDO) they’ve come up with a selection of bands who have mostly not been here before (well, Adelaide at least, if not Australia)  and who might well not tour here otherwise. The only international acts I’ve seen before are Les Savy Fav (who’ve been to Adelaide twice, but those who saw them – particularly the insane show with Pretty Girls Makes Graves in a basement on Hindley St – will be eager to see them again) and Holy Fuck who I saw in Wellington, NZ, and who I’m happy to see again. There are a couple of others who’ve been to Adelaide before (!!! and Ariel Pink) but I missed them. Tickets go on sale next Wednesday (20th), last year it sold out, largely I think because of Mumford & Sons, not sure if there’s any drawcard like that this time, I have no idea how popular these bands are.

Hahndorf

Did this ride to Hahndorf today. Highlights were the gentle descent down the beautiful Aldgate Valley Rd, the short ride up Ambleside Rd in Hahndorf (which passes by The Cedars), and Collins Rd between Summertown and Ashton which has a steep descent down into a gully followed by a picturesque climb back up to Lobethal Rd (there were warnings that it was a gravel rd, but actually it’s a nice riding surface, though it might not be so good going down, or in the wet). It was probably about equal to my previous longest ride but that one wasn’t into the hills. Next challenge might be Strathalbyn.

[gigs]

Just had a visit to the east coast, gig highlights were Paradise Motel, Pimmon and Pikelet.

UPDATE – Swervedriver are finally returning to Australia in February, but unfortunately no Adelaide date. Given their popularity in Australia in the past I was sure they’d do a more extensive tour so this is quite disappointing.

UPDATE 2 – The Ninetynine gig next week has been cancelled.

UPDATE 3 – Flying Lotus, Gaslamp Killer & Hudson Mohawke are missing Adelaide on their tour. Can someone please send me some good news about gigs?

UPDATE 4 – No, it just got worse. The Swans tour in March but not Adelaide.

Marble Hill via Corkscrew Rd

Just got back from 2 weeks in Sydney and Brisbane which means 2 weeks of no riding, so to make up for it I thought it was time to have a go at the well known Corkscrew Road climb. It has to be one of the most spectacular I’ve done, the view at the top when you look back down into the valley and see the road winding below you is great. I thought that by the time I got to the top I’d just cruise back down the Montacute Rd descent but it was so great to be back out on the bike I went the other way instead and completed the climb to Marble Hill and then back down through Norton Summit. A good start to my training for the 100km Amy’s Ride next month.
