[gigs] Festival Time Approaching

Lots of new stuff, largely thanks to the Adelaide Festival, and also before that the sessions series at the Space Theatre. I’ve only listed a few items for each so you might want to check out the full details. Also there are other festivals on the way with the full lineup of Laneway announced (as well as some welcome changes to the site) and a partial Womadelaide lineup with the rest due this month. Of less interest me are Future Music (though it does have Aphex Twin) and Big Day Out (very little of interest except Battles).

Must Read – Jonathan Holmes on Today Tonight

Last Monday night ABC’s Media Watch featured a story from Today Tonight last week which was just unbelievably bad. Now MW host Jonathan Holmes has an article on the Drum about it which is essential reading.

Holmes describes it

I’ve spent four years in the Media Watch chair – and in all that time I have never seen a more mendacious, deceptive and inflammatory piece of ‘journalism’.

Go and read the rest now. (Coincidentally it must be the first time I’ve seen an article on the drum with all the commentors basically in agreement)

It was truly disgraceful as they stirred up anger against refugees based on total misreprentations of the facts. I don’t think there was a political motive, it’s just that stirring up outrage is a good way at getting ratings and you pick some of the most disadvantaged people in our society (a common tactic for so-called current affairs shows as pointed out on Frontline so many years ago) then you can get away with it.They seem to have no regard for journalistic ethics, don’t care what happens to their victims … just as long as they get more viewers than their competitor. We all know that these prime time “current affairs” programs are terrible  but this seems to be a new low even for them.

Holmes concludes with

I hope that anyone who had anything to do with Today Tonight’s tawdry effort feels ashamed of themselves. They should. That includes, of course, the reporter and producers involved. In my view it also includes executive producer Craig McPherson; his boss, the director of news Peter Meakin; his boss, Seven CEO David Leckie; all the way up to the chairman, Kerry Stokes. They are the ones who tolerate and excuse a culture that treats this sort of ‘journalism’ as acceptable.

Hear hear.

If you watch Today Tonight then why not just switch off instead. You’ll be better informed about what’s going on in the world by staring at a blank screen for half an hour than by watching their show which leaves you less well informed than you were in the first place.

Up to Marble Hill via Montacute, then down to Basket Range and back up again via Pound Road. Some of the nicest areas in the hills that are still pretty close to town.

[gigs] Festival of Unpopular Culture

The Festival of Unpopular Culture starts tonight, details here. It involves a number of gigs, in particular tomorrow night Like Leaves play at the Mercury for the premiere of the film Echotone and later on at Format there’s a great lineup with The Coolies, Kitchen’s Floor and Terrible Truths. Next weekend there’s Rat vs Possum and Gold Bloom, and there’s lots of other stuff as well (including a hell of a lot of Nigel Koop which can only be a good thing). Download the program and have a look, there’s lots of non-gig stuff as well (gig guide readers might be particular interested in the panel discussion which includes Dave Graney, Sarah Chadwick, Nicci Reid and Matt Banham on Sat 15th).

Flying Nun 30th Anniversary in November

The great New Zealand record label Flying Nun will be celebrating their 30th anniversary this November. I’ve previously featured an excellent documentary about them which can still be viewed.

To celebrate the anniversary I’m going to do an all Flying Nun set at the Metro, details in the poster below. Also a number of Flying Nun bands are touring NZ in November as part of the celebrations, though before that The Bats will be playing some Australian shows (east coast only).

Lots of great music below the fold

In other news, yet more acts have been added to Earth Station, including The Catholics, a band lead by The Necks’ Lloyd Swanton.

The Clouds have recently got back together and are coming to Adelaide in December (sadly, just as happened with another great 90’s Sydney band reuniting and coming to Adelaide – Smudge – I’m going to be out of town at the time though.)
