Sydney Festival

The music lineup for the 2008 Sydney festival is amazing. Already Bjork and Battles are scheduled to come to Adelaide with the BDO, and Andrew Weatherall has a show at Rocket, but will anyone else be playing here? I would be very happy to see any of Sufjan Stevens, Low, Brian Wilson, Tunng, Mice Parade or Kimmo Pohjonen, but most of all I really want to see Joanna Newsom.

The Original Movember

Despite what some people might tell you, Movember began in Adelaide in 1999. I know this since I’ve been a participant ever since the first one. Channel 7 news were there to document it and now this is available on You Tube

[youtube NPH0qQFqs0M]

Watch right to the end for the classic comment that gave us the motto – Joins est Brucingus. Love the file footage of Tom Selleck as well, as a spokesman for an entirely made up association of moustache enthusiasts.

The original Movember crew can be found at www.movember.org

Daydream Nation in Adelaide (but maybe not Honey Steel’s Gold)

The rumours have been flying and the official website still only directs you to Sydney & Melbourne announcements (UPDATE – actually all of the cities are there but except for those two they are the same colour as the background so they’re hard to notice), but check this out.

Sonic Youth play Daydream Nation at the Fowler’s Courtyard on Feb 22 with support

from The Scientists playing Blood Red River.

That’s not all, also Died Pretty play Doughboy Hollow at the Gov on Feb 14

http://www.dontlookbackconcerts.com/au/ade/dp/

In Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane Died Pretty play with Ed Kuepper who is performing Honey Steel’s Gold. I really really want this to be in Adelaide as well but it doesn’t look good at this stage. Also, Sydney & Melbourne get Low performing Things We Lost in the Fire.

Tonight No Through Road, who have been in fantastic form, support The Mess Hall’s cd launch at Jive. I don’t know anything about the headliners but am considering going just for NTR.

Ninja Tune fans have a couple of shows to get excited about. Firstly Japan’s DJ Kentaro, who did a Ninja Tune-only mix for the Solid Steel series is playing at the Crown & Sceptre on the 8th of November. Secondly Luke Vibert, who has had a number of tracks under his own name on various Ninja Tune releases (including the absolute classic Get Your Head Down) as well as a number of albums as Wagon Christ, will team up with Zero dB, who put out the excellent album Bongos, Bleeps and Basslines on Ninja Tune, again at the Crown Sceptre (which is the Adelaide home of Ninja Tune, having previously hosted Kid Koala and Amon Tobin).

Early next year we’ll have something for the Warp label fans as well, with Andrew Weatherall, of the Sabres of Paradise and Two Lone Swordsmen at Rocket.

Don’t wait that long to go to Rocket though, because on Nov 16 you can see the cd launch by Birth Glow, a trio with members of No Through Road, Jemima Jemima and Sweet Raxxx. I’ve only seen them once but have been very keen to see them again. Supporting are Hit the Jackpot and Skeletons, should be a good one!

Bill Callahan fans should take note that his gig at the Jade has been moved to the 11th of November, and he will be supported by The Sea Thieves, who’ve been playing some fantastic shows lately. This is also good news because it means that it no longer clashes with Via Tania.

Finally Ned Collette is set to return to Adelaide twice in the next couple of months. First for a solo show at the Jade on Nov 3, and then with full band on December 9. Make sure you get to at least one, he is well worth seeing.

[gigs]

This weekend sees not one, but two gigs involving Little Ice Age. Now, this would be exciting enough under normal circumstances, but since they played their last ever show a few weeks ago it makes it even more exciting. Is it too soon to call this a reunion? I think that it was the last ever show with a full band, and these will be acoustic shows. Anyway, see them while you can!

The show on Saturday is of particular interest since they are playing as part of a big lineup of quality local bands. The occasion is the end of an era at the Prince Albert as they are changing hands. The P.A. has been a big, big supporter of local music. Not just putting on loads of gigs, but often when I’ve been in there on other nights they are playing great Adelaide music on the stereo. Should be a very big night.

Still haven’t decided whether I’ll go to Parklife on Sunday, but I’m leaning towards going just to see M.I.A who was great at the BDO last year. Hopefully Botanic Park is a bit less dusty than it was for Womad.

Also, don’t forget that you can hear me on Radio Adelaide every Tuesday between about 5:15 and 5:30. Either tune in to 101.5 FM if you’re in Adelaide, or listen to the streaming audio on their website from anywhere.

[gigs]

Just a quick update about some gigs tomorrow night.

The string quartet Fourplay are visiting from Sydney and will be playing at the Space Theatre at the festival centre at 8pm.

At Urtext there are a couple of other interstate visitors, Ned Collette and Francis Plagne will each be playing.

Down at the Prince Albert there is the first ever gig by a new local band. Polite Society, which features members of Terrance Dicks. They’ll be playing with Hit the Jackpot and Late Night Matinee and it’s free.

If on the other hand you are heading to the Something For Kate show at Fowlers then you’d better make sure you get there early enough to catch No Through Road.

[gigs] Dubstep comes to Adelaide

Some of you may have noticed a bit of dubstep creeping into my On the Stereo lists at the end of gig guide emails. I’ve been thinking for a while it would be great if someone would put on a dubstep night in Adelaide … well, it’s even better than I expected. Not only is there a dubstep night on at the Rhino Room this weekend, but it features one of the big names in dubstep, Benga, all the way from the UK. Just when you think it couldn’t get much better than that I could point out that it costs just $10!

If you want to know more then you can check out Benga on myspace, or a feature on the BBC site which includes a short documentary film, or this feature at Resident Advisor, or get yourself a copy of the May issue of The Wire for their excellent dubstep primer (obviously anything with Mark E Smith + Mouse on Mars on the cover is essential anyway).

By the way, for former gig guide email readers who know about the gig challenge – it’s done for this year (but I’ll keep going to gigs obviously).

Also, Little Ice Age fans take note – they may have played their last gig as a full band (and it was an excellent show), but they still have a couple of acoustic shows coming up.

I’ll be on the radio tomorrow

Starting tomorrow (Tuesday 4th Sep), I’ll be making a regular Tuesday appearance on the drive time show on Radio Adelaide. I’ll be on from about 5:15pm to 5:30pm helping out with the event rundown (but the show goes from 4pm so you can tune in earlier). You can find Radio Adelaide at 101.5 FM.
